In Korean grammar, talking about the past involves using specific verb endings and sentence structures to indicate actions or events that have already occurred. Here are some key points on how to talk about the past in Korean:

1. Past Tense Verb Endings:

  • To indicate the past tense in Korean, you can add the verb ending "-았/었" or "-였" to the verb stem, depending on the final consonant of the stem.

  • For verbs ending in vowels: Attach "-았/었" (았 for verbs ending in consonants and 었 for verbs ending in vowels).

  • For verbs ending in consonants: Attach "-았/었" (았 for verbs ending in ㄹ and 었 for other consonants).

2. Conjugation Example:

  • Original Verb: 먹다 (to eat)

  • Past Tense: 먹었어요 (I ate)

3. Past Continuous Tense:

  • To express an action that was happening in the past, use the past tense ending "-고 있었" added to the verb stem.

  • For example: 먹고 있었어요 (I was eating).

4. Past Perfect Tense:

  • To express an action that had already happened before another past action, use the past tense ending "-았/었" (as described above) and then attach "-던" to the verb stem.

  • For example: 먹었던 것 (something that I had eaten before).

5. Past Honorifics:

  • When speaking about actions in the past, Korean honorifics can be used to show respect to the subject of the action.

  • Use the past tense ending "-셨/으셨" or "-이셨" for honorific verbs, depending on the final consonant of the stem.

6. Past Negation:

  • To make a negative past tense sentence, use the past tense ending "-지 않았/았어요" or "-지 않았/었어요" and attach it to the verb stem.

7. Time Indicators:

  • To specify when the past action occurred, you can use time-related words such as "어제" (yesterday), "작년" (last year), "지난 주" (last week), etc.

Remember that Korean verb conjugation can vary depending on the verb stem's final consonant or vowel. Regular practice and exposure to various sentence structures will help you become more comfortable with talking about the past in Korean.
